Stuttgart is the capital of the Swabians and state capital of Baden-Württemberg (one of Germany's richest regions). Nestled in the slopes of the River Neckar valley, it was originally a stud farm back in 950 and only became a town in the 14th century. Its growth and success has come largely from big corporations such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche cars and Zeiss optical equipment setting up their headquarters there. The city also boasts having the world-famous Stuttgart Ballet, State Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra. There are also some superb museums and buildings. The surrounding area is varied with mountains, forests and vineyards with two thirds of the land being in parks, gardens and woodlands. Stuttgart is also an ideal base for traveling to the Black Forest, the Swabian Albs and Lake Constance, with Switzerland, Austria and France only a two to three hours drive.
I took the train from Frankfurt to Stuttgart and I think the journey was around 2 hours. This was at the end of a hard going 3 week trip on my own around Germany, St Petersburg, Prague and Budapest. I had just left Prague after having my wallet stolen that day and couldn’t wait to see the familiar faces of the friends who I was staying with in Dettinger (just out of Stuttgart). I ended up catching an earlier train and after several attempts finally got hold of them via the phone on the train to let them know I was going to be early. After a great rush on their part to get there, I whisked me off to a nearby bar for a drink and to hear by stressful story – they obviously thought I needed that drink before we continued some 50 mins to their home.

I loved the buildings except for the Town Hall, shame it couldnt have been built a bit more traditionally. Nice to stay with those people, but what is a rumpus room???
Looks like your local hosts did a wonderful job. Both Stuttgart and Ulm sound interesting. (And the food too ;)
