Italy is found in southern Europe and has the distinct characteristic of being shaped like a boot. The Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia also are part of Italy as are many smaller islands. Its origins were formed around the century BC when settlements were formed in northern by the Etruscans and has been noted for having one of the longest histories in Europe. During the ancient Roman Empire times, Rome was the capital and today even, it remains so. Separate principalities of San Marino and Vatican City also come under Italy’s umbrella.

Most of the terrain is mountainous with the Alps being divided into three ranges and the Apennines which are also divided. The south is more agricultural and its population is less than the north which has most of the larger cities. The architectural wonders include the coliseum, along with the Romanesque and Gothic style building and cathedrals. The catacombs in Rome are a testament to the early Christians in the country. The country certainly produced some wonderful architects, painters and sculptors in the form of Bernini, Botticelli, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Palladio, just to name a meagre few – the piazza’s, museums and galleries are full of their inspired works.

Of course Italy is known for its great good and wines. Its risottos and pasta’s are found all over the world but probably my favourite choices are the desserts with the gelato and tiramisu being top choice. Make sure you spend plenty of time to not only take in the historical sights but also to fully take in the cafe's, open-air piazzas, and the hustle and bustle. I just adored Italy. I just loved the food, the wine and the music! Whatever your choice of interest, Italy will not disappoint.
