Pisa lies on the banks of the Arno approximately 10 km. from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The city is known for its art and is particularly famous for the Leaning Tower and other monuments in Piazza del Duomo and its past splendours as a sea republic. Galileo's birthplace, Pisa has one of the oldest universities in Europe. Napoleon founded the Scuola Normale Superiore here, the only one in Italy. For centuries it has been the destination of scholars and travellers and has developed a reputation for hospitality. Of interest to tourists: the whole Pisan Coast with Marina di Pisa (12 Km), Tirrenia (15 Km), Calambrone (18 Km), Marina di Vecchiano (17 Km), the charterhouse of Pisa (10 Km), the basilica of S. Piero a Grado (10 Km), the Natural Park of Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli (23,000 hectares of coastline with woods, marsh areas and more than 200 species of migratory birds).
Pisa has also been a breeding and wintering centre for internationally famous thoroughbred horses since the eleventh century. San Rossore race course lies in an incomparably fine corner of the park and almost seems to rise above its function as a popular horse-racing circuit. |
