The Pantheon was built as a temple built to honour the Roman gods. The name ‘Pantheon’ is Greek and means ‘of all the gods’. Of all the Roman monuments, this is the best preserved. The original Pantheon was built when Constantine converted the Roman Empire to Christianity in 27 B.C. It became a church. The structure was quite a feat and at one time the dome of the Pantheon was the largest in Euorpe. Inside is also the burial place for Italy’s first two kings.

Vittoriano is a monument entitled to Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoia, first king of Italy. The project started with G. Sacconi in 1885 and was completed in 1935. The 'Altare della Patria' (the central part of the monument) opened in 1925. There was buried the Unknown Warrior, symbol of all people dead during First World War. The style of Vittoriano follows Greeks and Latin criteria. .

The coliseum was partially destroyed but still it is an enormous structure and one of the largest Ancient Roman ruins. In A.D. 70, the emperor Vespasian began the building of the 45-50,000 seat stadium (which is larger than some baseball stadiums built today). The building was completed in A.D. 75 and opened by Vespasian's son Titus.

The Coliseum was used for shows, mostly gladiatorial combats with man against man or man against beast. Trap doors in the floor would allow famous gladiators to make a grand entrance, or to allow the Caesar to spring animals into the arena. Apparently they could even flood the floor and hold mock naval battles in. Sailors would hoist sails over the top to shade the fans in the Hot Roman Sun. Quite an amazing experience to walk around and imagine all that had gone on there. .

This fairly unadorned looking church was built on the site of a food market during the 6th century. A Romanesque bell tower and portico were added to the church in the 12th century. In the 19th century a Baroque facade was removed in order to restore the church to its original form. The church features are the mosaic pavement and a canopy over the main altar as well as the raised choir and bishop's throne. Set into the wall is the famed Bocca della Verita (Mouth of Truth). This was in the movie, 'Roman Holiday'. This is thought to have been a drain cover dating before the 4th century B.C. Medieval tradition had it that the formidable jaws of the mouth would snap shut over the hands of those who told lies - which proved to be useful for testing the faithfulness of spouses.

Stone Mask (Bocca della Verita – literally meaning, mouth of truth). Found in the portico of the Santa Maria Church is a marble disk representing a face, which probably served as a drain plug. According to popular belief, a liar who dares put his hand in the mouth will have it bitten off.

Piazza Navona was once the site of the Emperor Domitian's Stadium. This is a really lovely square which has Bernini's fountain of the Four Rivers in its centre. The square was transformed from a stadium by Pope Innocent X in the mid 17th century. .
