Off The Beaten Path: Waitomo Glowworm Caves
  • Tip Rating:
  • The caves have been in existence for more than 100 years and attracting people from all over the world. You can take a guided tour through the limestone cave and a boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto where these tiny insects glow in the dark and reflect off the water deep under the ground. The acoustics in the Cathedral cave is astounding. Stalactites, stalagmites and sculptures have formed as a result of water dripping from the roof of the caves or flowing over the exposed limestone walls. There are well laid out tracks through the native bush that surround the caves as well.

The caves are east of Rotorua - about 153kms (93 miles).

    Off The Beaten Path: Taupo

  • Lake Taupo was formed by enormous volcanic explosions, the biggest being in 186AD. The lake is internationally acclaimed for its year-round trout fishing. There are many water activities or simply take a cruise on the lake, or relax on the shore. To the south of Lake Taupo, three massive volcanoes cluster together to form Tongariro National Park. In winter, these magnificent mountains lure thousands of skiers.

Taupo is 82kms (51 miles) south of Rotorua.

Wonderful insight into the Maori world ... this place looks quite unreal. Corn cooked in a steaming pool and the Maori Hangi sound simply divine.

Now I know why you adopt that name,..this primitive birds are so lovely. It is amazing to know they lay such a huge egg, relative to their body weight! Thanks for sharing.
