Burano is only a small island just 7 kms north of Venice proper. The homes and buildings have their own unique style and are brightly coloured. I believe we were told that this originated from days when fisherman came home late and could find their homes easier because of the colour - who knows.

Venice Lido is only a short boat ride away from St.Mark's Square. With shores stretching 12km, it has one of the world's most attractive and exclusive beaches. If you are tempted to spend a day sunbathing and swimming, the concierge of your hotel will be only too pleased to reserve a beach hut for you. At the furthest ends of Lido, facing the sea, there is a fully-functioning private airport, the Nicelli Airport, and the Golf Club Lido with 18 holes.

Murano is world famous for its production of fine traditional glass. Once produced in Venice itself, a state decree ordered the removal of the furnaces to Murano because of the number of fires they had caused in the city. Murano had already served as a place of refuge for fugitives from the mainland and in later centuries, the Venetian nobility built villas, monasteries and churches on the island. .

Fabulous page with brilliant photos. I am just back from Venice. These directly added 12 % service charge to restaurants bills is in my opinion a Tourist Trap. I never saw that in any other Italian city ... |
