The Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark's) is the most famous building in Venice. The church was built to honour the apostle Mark. Hanging from inner walls are great art works and there more than 43,000 ft of gold mosaics. The Pala d'oro an estimated 250 gold plated paintings and is incredibly covered some 1,300 pearls, 300 emeralds ,400 garnets, 90 rubies, 90 amethysts, and 300 sapphires. The body of St Mark is stored in the alcove. After a fire in 976 it was lost only to be rediscovered about 100 years later. While you can take a tour through the basilica daily, the best time to visit San Marco is during a high mass.

This square has been the central point of Venetian life since the founding of the state. Napoleon described it as 'the most elegant drawing room in Europe'. It is the only one to be known as 'piazza'. Around this square are most of the cities luxury hotels, shops and restaurants. Of course there is the infamous St. Mark's basilica. Various museums such as the Palazzo Grassi and La Fenice are also found around the square.

The bridge is the oldest of the three bridges spanning the canal. Originally made of wood, it collapsed in 1440 and was rebuilt, again of wood but with the addition of shops along it. It had a special mechanism which allowed the middle section to be moved whereby even the tallest mastered ships could sale through. It was somewhat unstable though and in the 16th century it was decided to rebuilt it. The new 28m single span bridge was completed in 1592.

Doges Palace or the Palazzo Ducale as it is also known was built between 1309 and 1424. The Ducale Palace used to be the residence of the Doge up until the Venetian Republic fell in 1797. It also held the offices of many political organisations such as the Chancellery, Naval offices and the Grand Council chamber to name a few. The façade of the building has beautiful arches on the lower two levels.

You can reach the spacious courtyard of the Doges Palace through the Piazzetta di San Marco. There is a quite a mix of architecture with the use of Renaissance classicism and gothic. There is also a large staircase which was built by Sansovino. The courtyard was completed around 1600.

Lord Byron romanticised this elevated corridor for criminals, and you can cross it as a paying customer rather than as a prisoner. The pink outline stands out against the gloomy alcoves of the canal and joins the Doges Palace to the 16th Century Prigioni Nuove (new prisons).

Venice's major waterway, the Grand Canal bisects the whole city. Running from the railway station to San Marco, it is shaped like an upside down 'S'. It is almost 4kms long and 5 metres deep with the average width being 50 metres. Gondolas and crafts of every size and shape travel the canal, making at times a heavily congested waterway. A unique sight with its banks lined with an incredible line up of medieval palaces and churches.
