Fez is one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities and certainly the oldest and has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Fez (or Fes in French) was established in 789 by Idris I and called Madinat Fas. The town enclosed within its walls sat on the right bank of the Fes River. Another walled town was established by Idris’s son on the left bank in 818. The first inhabitants were expelled Muslim families from Cordoba in Spain, followed by further families from Tunisia |
| | Over time, Fez held the title of capital of Morocco before relinquishing the helm in 1912 when Rabat became the capital under French rule. During the Almohad Dynasty and especially the years from 1170 to 1180, Fez was believed to have been the largest city in the world. |
Today Fez is Morocco’s third largest city but is considered the country’s religious, cultural and intellectual centre. Located between the Riff and the Middle Atlas Mountains, the city is made up of Fes El Bali (the old city) and Fes El Jedid (the New city). The King of Morocco’s wife, Princess Lalla Salma, was born in Fes which has made this medieval city even more popular.
