The name Rabat is derived from the Arabic word Ribat which means stronghold and the name came from a Berber leader’s idea of building a huge fortress overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. He had hoped to attack the Christians of Spain but this never eventuated because the leader died not achieving the power he had hoped for and the castle-like fortress was turned into a city. |
| | Rabat is the capital of Morocco and known as the ‘Royal City’. It is not however the largest city in the country. The city sits on an river estuary on a piece of Morocco’s coastline made up of an infinite expanse of white sandy beaches. The city is modern with its parks, boulevards and embassies and is also the home of the Royal Family and has the nickname of the ‘Washington of North Africa’. There is also museums, theatres and monuments and the largest universities in the Morocco. |
