Tangier sits at the tip of Morocco and on the North African coastline and entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar and is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan region. Inhabitants first began arriving here during the 5th century BC and the town was named Tangis. During the time of the Romans it became the main port and commercial centre of Morocco. In 1471 it was seized by the Portugues and became part of a dowry of Catherine of Braganza to Charles II of England. In 1684 the town was given back to the Moroccans. |
| | Tangier is seen as being the gateway to Morocco. It is also seen as a playground for the rich and famous. It is within an easy day trip from Spain for sightseeing or shopping. There is a proposed tunnel which would like Morocco to the Iberian Peninsula. Construction of this tunnel is due to be completed by 2011. |
