    Sky City: Sky City Theatre
  • Tip Rating:

  • This theatre is the newest entertainment venue in the city. The theatre caters for 700 patrons and provides the state-of-the-art technology. Events at the theatre are from major local and international performers in rock, pop, jazz, dance, theatre and cabaret.

    The Loaded Hog,
  • Tip Rating:

  • Right in the best location near Viaduct Harbour, the Loaded Hog is certainly popular with the food and beer always being good. There are large paintings of famous New Zealanders as well as antique farm implements on the wall for decoration. Their beer is brewed on site – Hog Gold Lager, Hog Draft, Hog Wheat and Hog Dark Ale which are all available on tap.

    Showgirls
  • Tip Rating:

  • If you are looking for something a little ‘hotter’ in nightspots then this is claimed (by them) to be the hottest spot in Auckland. Lots of ladies in quite a flashy décor complete with lasers, lights waterfalls and smoke (for effect). They also claim to have a large range of alcoholic choices which are not available anywhere else in NZ. There are also private rooms and yes, it is a strip club and not personally checked out by the writer.

    The Empire Hotel
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Empire Hotel has been in existence since 1870. A lovely Victorian building which stands on a busy corner at Nelson and Victoria streets. The hotel has been full refurbished and has a café/brasserie which operations during the day only. .There is also a large gaming area with pool and darts and they offer free live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

    Shakespeare Tavern and Brewery
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Shakespeare Tavern has been a very popular pub over the years. These days its draws quite an eclectic crowd despite the traditional English-style and unpretentious decor. Usually its loud and casual and just a great place to hang out. It was the pioneer of the boutique-brewery industry. They brew their own beer on the premises, which is the attraction. They have seven regular brews and other specialities depending on the whim of the brewer. Apparently their ales are especially tasty. There is a bar downstairs with some tables and booths, a Casino bar on the 2nd Floor and a bar and café on the 3rd floor.

    Open from 11.30am until late.

    Hollywood Theatre
  • Tip Rating:

  • The old Hollywood Theatre opened in 1915 and is still operational today. NZ film pioneer Rudall Hayward used the theatre for his productions. For 10 years the Hollywood Theatre screened the Rocky Horror Picture show every Friday and Saturday night and set the record for the longest movie run in NZ history. The last screening was in 1988. The Theatre continues to operate to this day.

    Naval & Family Tavern
  • Tip Rating:

  • The old Naval and Family Tavern has been in Karangahape Road for as long as I can remember. It is one of the oldest public houses in Auckland. Today though there it has a casino and rows of gaming machines. Mostly an older crowd still hangs out at this pub after work or on late night shopping. Still an old fashioned and friendly place to have a chin wag.

    Open : 10am-late daily

    Cuba Cocktail Lounge and Bar
  • Tip Rating:

  • Also known as Cigar Emporium, Cocktail Lounge and Piano Bar. They say they are NZ’s only piano bar but I’m not sure about that but they certainly were the first cigar bar in Auckland. They have live performances in the piano bar three nights a week (Tues, Wed & Thurs) from 9.00pm until late and the place is usually pack on most weekends and after work during the week. Cigars of course are the main item of interest, the lounge area also has one of NZ’s largest selections of cognac’s, ports and of course, cigars. They are also available for private functions.
