Lyttelton is the lovely scenic port of Christchurch. It is a wonderful sight driving into Lyttleton from the hills and looking down. There are lots of little coves and boat moorings and you can reach Lyttelton by driving through the road tunnel or over the Port Hills.

Twizel is a township south of Christchurch which was built in 1968 as base for one of the most impressive hydro-electric power schemes in the Southern Hemisphere. The town was to have been bulldozed once the construction scheme was finished but the population began a campaign to keep it’s existence. The town has become of the McKenzie Country and services the surrounding areas as well as expanding its tourist role as the nearest township to Mount Cook which is only about 45 minutes away.

Lake Tekapo is a beautiful lakeside town which is a popular rest stop when traveling between Christchurch and Queenstown. The main attractions are the spectacular views of Mt Cook as well as some very scenic hiking paths which include a three hour walk to Mount John Lookout. Located midway between Christchurch and Queenstown in the heart of the Mackenzie Country.

The Church of the Good Shepherd is an historical little church which was built in 1935 from stone and oak. It sits right on the shore of Lake Tekapo with an amazing view.

New Zealand's most famous sheep stealer, James McKenzie owned a dog named Friday. Both the Mackenzie County and the pass are named after him. McKenzie was apprehended at the Mackenzie Pass by an overseer for the Rhodes Brothers at Levels Station. His dog Friday drove approximately one thousand sheep towards Burkes Pass in 1855 from Levels Station. The statue of the dog has become the symbol of pioneering sheep farming in the Mackenzie and sits on the shore of Lake Tekapo.

Mount Cook National Park is where you will find New Zealand's tallest mountain, Mt Cook (or Aoraki). The area also has the largest glacier in the country, Tasman Glacier. At the foot of the mountain is Mt Cook village and is the starting point for several hiking trails. The Maori name, Aoraki, means Sky Father and Mt Cook stands at 3,755 making it the highest peak in Australasia. The Mt Cook National Park is a world heritage area and contains 22 of New Zealand’s 27 highest peaks. It is basically 700 sq kms of glaciers, snow and granite and an incredible area for flora and fauna.

The Hermitage Hotel sits at the foot of Mt Cook which is part of the Southern Alps. The view from inside looking out is spectacular. This mountain resort fits comfortably into the natural environment and is part of a heritage stretching back well over century.
