Adelaide is a charming and attractive city with a style all its own. Laid out on a square mile grid pattern of wide streets and open squares, it is compact enough to walk around in an hour or two. There is a lovely mix of culture, old charm and delightful parks and gardens.
The city was founded in 1836 and named after Queen Adelaide. The original European explorer of the area was Captain Collett Barker in 1831 but it was Colonel William Light who surveyed the area and carefully laid out the plan of Adelaide. |
| | Adelaide nestles snugly between gently rolling hills and the sea and stretches some 63 kms from its southern most suburbs to its northern most outposts.
I have included the Grampians, McKenzie Falls and Halls Gap in a travelogue even though they are really located in Victoria, because they were part of a stop over on the way back to Melbourne after visiting Adelaide.
Fact :
The Barossa Valley, about 34 miles north of Adelaide, is Australia's most famous wine producing area. |
