Carnamah is around 307km north of Perth in the midlands wheatbelt area. The first person to arrive in the area was Duncan McPherson in the 1860 when he brought his sheet from the coast. His homestead was built in 1869 and is one of the historical buildings in the town today. The town was recognised in 1913. It is not certain where the name Carnamah originated from but it is most likely Aboriginal. Another thought is that it is a Gaelic word which means ‘cairn of the cattle’ (cattle rocks).
The town had a slow start but during WWI, the population began to expand with the establishment of a War Service Farming Scheme in the area. The area expanded again after WWII when some of the War Service Farms were released |
| | Today the area is made up of a mixture of farms including sheep and wheat. During the early spring time, the area is popular for its display of dramatic wildflowers. If you are driving from Perth to Geraldton, take the inland road and you will pass through Carnamah. |
