Coogee is just 7 or 8 kms south of Fremantle following the Old Coast Road. Primarily a residential suburb, the coastal area promotes fishing, safe swimming, beach walks and all kinds of other beach and sport activities.
Coogee's coastal area is set in the Cockburn Sound which extends from the south of the mouth of the Swan River at Fremantle for about 25kms to Point Peron near Rockingham. Garden Island extends down most of the sound.
Just out from Coogee Beach is an old shipwreck 'Omeo', a favourite with divers and fishermen. The Omeo was a four-mastered barque which was built in 1858 and went aground in the sound.
Also along the southern end of Coogee Beach you will find Woodman Park which has some unspoilt reserves popular with families for picnics. Within the park are old historic campsite buildings and wartime army munitions bunkers. At Woodman Point, there is a jetty there which also has a night light and is popular for fishing. |
