Fremantle Off The Beaten Path
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Off The Beaten Path: North Fremantle
  • Tip Rating:
  • North Fremantle sits on the north side of the mouth of the Swan River. Life on the north side has its share of bustle with the docklands and fishing boats coming and going. You can reach North Fremantle via the Stirling Highway or Queen Victoria St bridge from Fremantle. There have been many new residences created on the foreshore, several with their own moorings.

Off The Beaten Path: Matilda Bay Brewery
  • Tip Rating:
  • Matilda Bay Brewery is right on Stirling Highway as you drive from the beaches into Fremantle and was started in 1984 by a group of friends, brewers and businessmen who decided that Australia needed a better type of beer. The beer is said to have more flavour than any beer tasted before and is brewed in small, craft batches. With the popularity which exceeded demand, the company became public in 1988 and launched the popular Redback beer. This new brewery opened its facility in 1989.

Location : 130 Stirling Hwy North Fremantle

Off The Beaten Path: East Fremantle
  • Tip Rating:
  • East Fremantle is more suburban and quieter and just 2 kms from the city center. A lot of the houses were built in the 1930’s.

Down on the Swan River you can get superb views back cross to Perth city. There are cycle ways and footpaths which run from Point Walter through to Perth and are well used by joggers and cyclists.

Off The Beaten Path: Bibra Lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bibra Lake is a newer suburb located in the City of Cockburn about 15Km's from Fremantle. There is a lovely lake there which was close to my home and I spent many moments either walking around it or just sitting watching the pelicans sail on by and feeding the over enthusiastic black swans.

Off The Beaten Path: John Tonkin Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • As you drive along Riverside Rd you will come to John Tonkin Park. This is a lovely grassy reserve right on the beach. There is a jetty to fish off as well as play equipment for the kids and undercover picnic tables. You can get a nice view across the Swan River to the Mosman Park area. There is also a kiosk there.

Off The Beaten Path: Wireless Hill Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wireless Hill Park is rich in native flora and in spring you will see a good amount of red and green kangaroo paws as well as some cat’s paws. You may also see some Greenhoods, Donkey and spider orchids. The area was originally reserved for the use of the OTC as a buffer around a radio transmission aerial but in 1969 the City of Melville termed it an A class reserve.

Location : Off Canning Highway, Ardross.

  • On top of Wireless Hill is the Telecommunications Museum with its collection still housed it the original building dating back to 1912. It was the site of the very first communications radio in WA. Equipment dating back to the time of the earliest radio technology is display along with some of the developments which are still current today. You can see the first radio made in WA.

Off The Beaten Path: Rottnest Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rottnest Island (Rotto) is a sandy island (11km long, 5 km wide) about 19 km off the coast of Fremantle. It was discovered by the Dutch and was named 'Rats Nest' because of what appeared to be king size rats on the island. These rats are in fact Quokkas which are native wallabies found only on the island. They are usually tame and quite friendly.

    Off The Beaten Path: Perth
  • Tip Rating:
  • The city of Perth is set on the lovely Swan River and there are many landscape parks and gardens scattered about the city. Kings Park is a great vantage point to really view the city and surrounding area. Taking a river cruise is really a very enjoyable experience especially if you take it up to the wineries up the Swan Valley. Shopping is great in Perth and nightlife is very active in Northbridge.
