Greenough is around 25kms south of Geraldton and around 390kms north of Perth. The town was one of the first established settlements in Western Australia. While there is not much of a town in Greenough these days, you can take a tour of the historic town as it was when the area was first established.
The area was first discovered in 1839 by George Grey who was on a search for rich agricultural land. The river that runs through the area was named by Grey as being the Greenough River. This was after Sir George Bellas Greenough who at the time was President of the Royal geographical Society and was a sponsor for Grey. The area was first named Greenough Front Flats when it was settled in 1852. That was later shortened to Greenough. |
| | With the rich fertile pastures, the town thrived and grew to over 1,000 residents by the 1860’s. Unfortunately due to many natural disasters from droughts, flooding to hail storms, the agricultural side started to decline in favour of other areas. Farmers left the area and the town began to diminish. By the 1930’a businesses had closed, including the mills and the town declined to pretty much a ghost town. |
