Mingenew Travel Guide: 47 reviews and 129 photos

The area was settled during the 1850’s and the town established in 1906. Mingenew took its name from two versions of Aboriginal names for the area – Mininoo (Place of Many Waters) and Minganu (Place of Many Ants). The town which is about 119kms from Geraldton (383kms north of Perth) is known as ‘The Grain Centre’ and is a fairly typical of a wheatbelt town.

The first Europeans were the Gregory Bros who discovered some good grazing in this area in 1846. It took them 7 weeks to travel from Perth. They also discovered coal in an area north of Mingenew. The area is well known for marine fossils which are impregnated in the rock some 250million years ago. The land became an important cattle raising area in the early years.

Photos which are taken by myself and all headings are copyright and digitally marked. Please do not use them without permission. Thanks. (c) keeweechic 2001-2008 (copyright)
