Historic Precinct - Mount Barker
Historic Precinct

The Plantagenet Historical Society took over the property in 1968 and opened it as a museum in 1971. Several timeframes are depicted throughout the property such as the Convict Era (1867-1869), Police Force (1868-1957, the Perth to Albany Overseas Mail Coach (1879-1888), Post and Telegraph (1871-1890), the Railway Dam (11910-1950) and the Police and Mail Coach Horse Paddocks 1868 – 1940).

The Old Police Station Museum

The Old Police Station complex is now a museum. It is made up of several buildings including the stables, coach house and living quarters amongst lawn and heritage rose beds.. In 1919 a court house was added. Some of the duties of the local police were to have a change of horses for the mail coach to use when they brought the mail through from Perth.

The Lockup - Mount Barker
The Lockup

In 1887, the lockup was an added to the side of the stables out back. Prior to this facility, the local policeman would bring his prisoner back and tie him to a log in the front of the station. The prisoner would stay there all day. At night the prisoner would be moved into the kitchen and his leg secured to the kitchen table.

The Old Police Station - Mount Barker
The Old Police Station

The old Police Station was but in 1867 by convicts and officially opened in 1868. It was built out of local ironstone blocks which were cemented together with mud. Pit sawn timber supported the room and jarrah shingles clad it. The station cottage became the living quarters for the officers and their families after a new station was built.

Open Sat & Sun, public & school holidays, 10 am - 4 pm.

Captain Collet Barker - Mount Barker
Captain Collet Barker

Captain Barker was a member of the 39th Regiment. The mount was named after him by Dr Thomas Wilson. There is a memorial on the top of the mount and a directional marker also.

A 168 metre high TV tower sits on Mt Barker Hill. The steel structure is the tallest free-standing TV tower in the southern hemisphere. It weights around 218 tonnes.

Mt Barker Summit - Mount Barker
Mt Barker Summit

The summit sits above 404 metres above sea level and was climbed by Dr Wilson and his party in 1829. From the top Wilson and his party were able to survey a lot of the surrounding area and determine their next route in their exploration.
