Mount Barker is situated around 4 hours drive from Perth and around 35 minutes north of Albany in the Shire of Plantagenet which covers an area of some 4,792 square kilometres. National Parks surround the town such as the Stirling Range National Park to the north east and the smaller Porongurup Ranges 15 minutes to the east.

The town was first discovered in late 1829 by Europeans who first settled in Albany. The first settlers in this area was Sir Richard Spencer who was the Government resident in Albany. Spencer purchased 1,940 acres from Captain James Stirling. Stirling had been granted 100,000 acres in the area and this attracted other settlers to the area. The town was announced in 1899.

Mt Barker is centrally located with the Great Southern Wine Region. A number of boutique wineries are found in this area. The first vine was planted in 1967. The magnificent Stirling Ranges are just to the north east of the town.

I've been to Mt. Barker several times end 80's, early 90's. It has changed quite a bit or should I say that I didn't look at it from a tourist point of view at the time ;-)
