Ascot Racecourse sits just outside of downtown Perth and is Perth’s largest racecourse. The grandstand and other buildings were built during the early 1900’s. The track is 2,000 metres long and includes a 300m uphill straight. In 1995 the course had a $4 million upgrade. Racing is held throughout the year but the busiest time is during the Summer Carnival. The most famous event being the Perth Cup held on the 1st of January. The racetrack also includes 9 dining and bar facilities.

The Red Bull Airshow will be held again in Perth in 2007 and 2008. The race’s course is set up on the Swan River with huge blow up towers where the planes fly between and manoeuvre their way around. There is a festival like set-up in Langley Park just opposite the course for great viewing. Finding parking can be a pain. A good time to go to avoid a little of the crowd is the day before (the Saturday) when the pilots are practising for the main day on the Sunday.

The Red Bull Airshow appeared for the first time in Perth in November 2006. The event is an international competition event where the worlds most skilled pilots of all nationalities compete against each other in a race of accuracy, speed and expertise. This type of flying is called ‘air racing’ where an obstacle course has to be flown at the fastest possible speed. They fly low and sometimes at speeds of 400 kms per hour.

Just 25 mins north of the city in Whiteman Park is the Whiteman Model Helicopter Club (WMHC). Most of the helicopter flying is done on Saturdays and from 12.00pm on Sundays in the WA Model Aircraft Sports Centre. The club shares extensive facilities which include a clubroom, canteen and BBQ facilities and there is a children’s play area as well as ample parking. The field itself is usually open 365 days of the year and there is usually no cost for admission except on special events days where a small feel is charged at the entrance.

Right next to the Burswood Resort is the State Tennis Centre. It is said to be one of Australia’s most sophisticated as well as the country’s largest tennis complexes. There are 15 hard courts which include a covered Show Court, and open Rebound Ace court and 13 plexi-cushion courts. The courts are all individually lit. Courts can be hired 7 days a week for day or night use. Equipment can also be hired.
As part of the facilities, the Tennis Centre has 3 gazebos on court side for casual drinks or a bbq. They are all licensed.

One of the most picturesque golf courses which is set amongst 8 lakes, with the skyline of the city as a backdrop. The course has been described as the best public layout in Australia by the Australian Golf Digest. There are 18 holes set around water hazards and rolling fairways. They offer motorised golf cards, licensed café, indoor/outdoor Sprig Bar and Function Centre as well as day/night driving range and chipping and putting greens. There are also PGA Golf Professionals available for lessons both day and night. There is a Pro Shop which provides a broad range of equipment, accessories and apparel.
The course is open 365 days a year. From November to March the course is open from 6.00am to sunset. April to October, they open 7.00am to sunset.

The South of Perth Yacht Club is found on the western shore of the Canning River in Applecross. The club was founded in 1945 . They provide land & water pens, slipway, swinging moorings and a disabled hoist. There is also a restaurant which caters for lunch and dinner with wonderful views over the river. There are three bars as well as outside bbq areas and alfresco dining.
Summer Activity Days: Sat pm - keelboat racing, Sun pm - Centreboard racing. Wed - keelboat afternoon racing, keelboat twilight racing.
Winter Activity Days: Sat pm - Power boat time trials, Sun am or pm - Keelboat Frostbite Series racing

One of Perth’s most popular golf courses with a setting to totally distract you from you game. Set in a forest setting, this is a 18 hole championship resort course which meanders through the Roleystone Hills and provides views back to the ocean. The course was designed by Roger Mackay and Michael Coate. There are large undulating greens as well as the changes in elevation to negotiate. There are some 65 golf carts available, a driving range, two short game practice areas and two tennis courts just in case you haven’t have enough exercise.

The Yacht club opened in 1986 and is the fastest growing yacht club in Western Australia.
Since forming in 1986, Hillarys Yacht Club has become the fastest growing Yacht Club in W.A. The club offers competitive sailing and diving activities as well as power boating, angling and sail training courses. Aside from the clubrooms, they provide 250 berths.
Dive excursions are usually held on Saturday depending on the weather. Local dives range from Mindarie in the north, to Garden Island in the south and also at Rottnest Island.

The W.A. Rowing Club began in 1868 and lies on the foreshore of the Swan River. It is West Australia’s oldest rowing club and one of the oldest in Australia. The boatshed was built in 1905 and is about to celebrate its 100 yr anniversary.
The Rowing Club caters for members of all ages and levels. There are classes to learn how to row held throughout different times of the year. These classes usually last for 4 weeks and teach the basics of rowing. You can also take lessons at other times.
