Roleystone lies in the Darling Range, a huge granite outcrop, and is around 30kms south east of the downtown Perth. Growth was slow with timber workers and pastoralists moving to the area to establish themselves. Roleystone had its first sawmill in 1866 and by 1871 the local Roads Board was established.
Today the area flourishes with orchards which fill the valleys. Stunning views can be obtained from higher up in the hills. Most areas within these hills still appear to be untouched by early felling and you will see forests of eucalypt trees with flowing rivers meandering through them. Two reservoirs are found in this area, the Canning Reservoir which is popular with the locals and further up in the Darling Ranges is Mundaring Weir. These reservoirs irrigate the area which at one time grew wheat and then flows through a pipeline to Kalgoorlie, some 550kms away.
Two major attractions are found in this area. The Araleun Golf Resort and the Araluen Botanical Park. The Golf Resort is a 18 hole championship course with top notch greens which can be played all year around. The Botanical Park was established around 1929 and today covers 59 hectares. The gardens are particularly popular during the Yates Springtime in Araluen Festival when the valley is covered in Tulips.
