The Rottnest Hotel (or the Quokka Arms Hotel as it is now known) is one of the upmarket hotels on the island. It was once a stately Colonial style mansion and the official summer residence for the Governors of Western Australia. It was built in 1864 and recognised as one of the finest examples of Mid-Victorian architecture remaining in Western Australia. Originally it was named the Governor's Cottage to indicate its junior level to "Government House" on the mainland. It seems that the Governors usually spent up to 2 months annually on the island with their butler, servants and carriages.
The building was converted into the "Rottnest Hotel" in 1953. I have to say that while the view was great, we were right on the beach with our own balcony, the decor was pretty run down and the cost of the room didn’t run cheap. The name changed in 2004 and I believe it has gone through a major upgrade since.

The cabins are the Caroline Thomson Cabins and are cedar clad. These are a recent addition to the accommodation on Rottnest and were added in 2002. They are just one room cabins with a little veranda. They provide a kitchenette with two sets of bunks and a double bed. There is a separate bathroom. They hold up to 6 people and the rate is around $10.00 more per night at the weekends.
