Southern Cross Travel Guide: 18 reviews and 32 photos

Southern Cross is in the middle of the Yilgarn Shire which has been a flourishing farming area in Western Australia. Some properties are the largest in the state. The name Yilgarn is an Aboriginal word for Quartz or White Stone. The town was discovered around 1888 and was named after the constellation or stars which had guided the two founders – Mick Toomey and Tom Risely who discovered gold there. In the early days, new settlers had to rely on camel and horse teams to transport supplies to the town.

The attractions in the area are Frog Rock, Karalee Dam, Baladje Rock and Hunts soak. There are also beautiful areas during spring with carpets of wildflowers. Surrounding areas are Marvel Loch, Bodollin, Koolyanobbing, Moorine Rock and Bullfinch.

The Great Eastern Highway runs right through the town. Most of the streets are named after constellations or stars.
