York is a delightful old historic town in the Avon Valley around 97kms east of Perth. The town was first surveyed in 1930 by Robert Dale and was named after the city of York in England and established in 1831 on the banks of the Avon River when the first settlers arrived. It was also the first inland European settlement in Western Australia. The town was tiny with initially only 5 houses and the township did not really start to appear until 1835-36 when a store and army barracks were built and some 50 acres of land was cleared. In 1886 the railways arrived into york and with the recent discovery of gold at Southern Cross followed by Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie, scores of miners and prospectors arrived to make their trip across the plains to the goldfield.
The towns most impressive Victorian and Federation buildings were built during the next 10 years – a lot of which has been carefully restored to their glory days, in fact entering York, you would feel like you were stepping back in time. So much so that the town is the state’s most complete pioneering settlement and classified by the National Trust as York Historic Town.
York is the agricultural centre of the Avon Valley – heritage country of Western Australia.
