General Dos and Don'ts: Thai Customs and Taboos

  • Thai people have a number of customs and taboos which the visitor should respect. They are uncomfortable with very public displays of affection between both sexes although holding hands is now more accepted. They also see the head as being literally and figuratively as being the highest part of the body and therefore do not approve of touching the head of anyone.

    Buddhism / Monks: Buddhist Monks

  • Buddhist monks are forbidden to lay a hand on a woman or even be touched by one. If, as a female, you wish to give something to a monk, you must hand it to a male first who will pass it on for you.

Shoes - when to take them off: The Do's and Don'ts of Shoes

  • It is alright to wear shoes when you are walking around the grounds of a Buddhist temple, but not inside the chapel where the Buddha image is kept. Females should also ensure that their shoulders and legs are covered before they enter the temple. Please be respectful and do not wear shorts.

Feet (and Heads): Don't go Pointing your Feet

  • It is considered rude to point the sole of your foot at another person, so try to avoid doing so when sitting opposite someone, and following the concept that the foot is the lowest limb, don't point your foot to show anything to anyone.

  • Money can be exchanged at currency exchange services of banks and at authorised money changers. Rates vary slightly from bank to bank. The currency exchange services are often box offices in front of bank branches. Many hotels double as authorised money changers though their rates are usually not as good as those of banks or independent authorised money changers. A small number of independent authorized money changers offer better rates than banks.

Your description of Bangkok, is dead on. But, I don't recall any smoking on the flights.

The crock farm was badly over crowed and run down, the water looked like it had never been cleaned.I felt sorry for the crocks living in that filth. And if you have a long nose and pale skin, expect to be charged 3 times the price, it sucks!!
