During the 16th and 17the centuries, Agra used to be the seat of the Imperial Mughal Court prior being shifted to Delhi by Shah Jahan. The capital was later moved back to Agra by the son of Shah Jahan where he imprisoned his father in Agra Fort. Again in 1653 the capital was then moved again to Aurangabad.
The city was founded in 1506 by Sultan Sikandar Lodi. During the years of the Mughal dominance, the city underwent a lot of building with the construction of the Red Fort (or Agra Fort) in 1565 and later on of course the Taj Mahal in 1643. Wonderful Persian gardens were also laid on the banks of the Yamuna river. There was also a city built just on the edge of Agra know as Fatehpur Sikri. |
| | Agra is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh which has a population of around 175 million, and is the states third biggest city. Part of the city lies on the banks of the Yamuna River. The biggest attraction in Agra is of course the magnificent Taj Mahal, the 7th Wonder of the World and which is a world heritage site along with Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. |
