Elephanta Island is found around 10 kilometres off the eastern shore of Mumbai (Bombay) in the Arabian Sea and it will take you around an hour to reach it by ferry. The Island was originally named Gharapuri (Fort or Fortress City) but the name was changed to Elephanta Island after the Portuguese found a large stone elephant. |
| | Depending on the tide, the Island measures around 10–16 sq kms in size. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is known for its cave temples which probably date back to the 6th century AD and were probably built by the Kalchuri King Krishnaraja. The caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva and cover around 60,000 sq ft with a roof of natural rock. The carved figures and columns are really quite remarkable and well worth the side trip from Mumbai. |
