Khajuraho is a small village in northern Madhya Pradesh and was given the name from the Khajur tree, a palm tree which is found growing in abundance in the area. The village is famous for its amazing temples which evolved over a 100 year period from 950 A.D. to 1050 A.D. and totalled around 85 at one time until the end of the Chandela dynasty when they were abandoned and forgotten about around 700 years. Upon rediscovery during the last century, only 22 have managed to survive the ravages of a dense jungle that consumed and hid them. The Western Group of temples are the largest and the most significant group. |
| | The Chandelas were medieval Rajput Kings who reigned over the central part of India. The small village is all that remains of what once was a large city during the Chandela era. The temples are certainly the draw card for tourists and there are several hotels and guesthouses to cater for them. Other than that, there are a cluster of shops selling handcrafts and clothing as well as tailors who are only too ready to whip you up anything you want in only a few hours |
