  • Hotel Roter Adler is in the old town part of Innsbruck, tucked away in a little corner. Not a very big hotel but comfortable enough. The elevator though was real tiny. Very handy to wandering about the town.

  • The Parkhotel Schonbrunn is Vienna's largest hotel complex and right next to Schonbrunn Palace -I stayed there and it was a great location for wandering through the palace gardens (but it is located away from the city). One of the few hotels that can consider itself 'Emperor-approved'. Built in 1907 as a guesthouse for VIPs visiting Franz Josef at Schonbrunn.

Unique Qualities: Restaurant, bar, cable, satellite, garden, indoor swimming poor, spa, solarium, fitness studio.

  • I stayed across the river on Kampa Island at Hotel U Pava ( "At the Peacock") which was right next to the famous Charles bridge - just a few steps from a romantic corner of old Prague.

The hotel succeeded in saving the historical character of the building when it was renovated in 1991. There couldn't have been more than 10 rooms. The only problem I had was a little noise from the wooden floors, both people walking up them late at night and the people in the room above - god knows what they were doing very late at night - sleepwalking? :-)

Unique Qualities: Restaurant, Cafe, Bar, Laundry service, Business services, Baby sitting service, Car service, Free car park, Theatre, Opera, Sightseeing tours tickets available, Individual tours. Breakfast included.

Very small lovely old building with timber floors and dark nutwood furniture. The ceilings were decorated with crystal chandeliers and the walls were lined with fine works of art.

  • My hotel was just a stone's throw from the bustling city centre. This hotel had just opened and I think we were the first group to stay there. Checking in too a little time as I think they were a little overwhelmed, but I had no complaints in staying here.

The metro is only 150 metres away. Orly Airport - ORY - 15 km, Charles de Gaulle Airport - CDG - 40 km, Downtown Paris - 5 minutes.

  • This is where I stayed. A grand old hotel within walking distance of the beaches. My room had a lovely little balcony with French doors.

  • The Meridien Part-Dieu formerly the Pullman Hotel)**** This is where I stayed, right in the town centre. It is the highest hotel in Europe above the city at a height of 108m, and has exceptional views over Notre dame de Fourviere and the Mont Blanc. The underground is only 200 metres away.

  • This is a fairly old motel which is run by a family. There are 40 fairly modern rooms which are equipped with TV (cable & satellite), private bathroom, telephone and soundproof windows. There is a breakfast room (breakfast was included in my rate). Cosy and friendly and very handy

  • The Berlin Mark Hotel is right in the heart of the city, only 5 minutes walk to Kurfurstendamm . Tour buses left from the end of the street. Hard Rock Cafe was only a few doors away.

Unique Qualities: Breakfast was included with the room cost and was a great selection of muesli, fruit, hot dishes and an assortment of bread. Even a chocolate on the pillow at night:-)

  • On my first unexpected night in Frankfurt I stayed close to the airport at the Airport Novotel' hotel. This hotel had its own shuttle, was fairly large and modern and the room was good. I have since looked in the directory of Novotels and cannot find it listed now.

On my return to Frankfurt I had booked a hotel through a travel agents Hotel Guide - I didn't know much about it except its location and price and that's what I went on. It was the Wiesbaten Hotel on Baseler Strasse, quite an old building and perhaps a little rundown but the room, although basic, was clean and tidy. the walls however were a little too thin (I had 'active' neighbours) but it was right opposite the railways station and I was able to take the train from the airport and just walk across to the hotel.

The photo is of the Hotel Frankfurt.
