Type: Family Travel Description: Another monument to see is Arch of Septimus Severus. Its one of the most striking and best preserved monuments in the Forum. It was erected in AD 23 to celebrate the 10th anniversery of the accession of Septimus Severus. The holes where his name was pegged are clearly still visable. Its hard to believe that during the middle ages, this arch was buried with rubble and a barbar shop was run on it.

>Do go to the Spanish Steps which were built in the 17th century. The steps combine straight sections, curves and terraces to create one of the cities most dramatic ,distinctive landmarks. This is one of the most lively places in Rome.At the bottom of the steps is Piazza di Spagna, and the Barcaccia fountain(1627)which resembles a sinking boat. The shopping here is great.Loads of trendy shops. Go to the Forum, which was the centre of political, commercial and judical life in acient Rome. There are a patchwork of ruined temples and basilicas.Excavation of the forum continues today. The Arch of Septimus Serverus must not be missed. It was built in ad 203 and is the best preserved and most striking monument of the forum Do walk around and discover old streets and squares and find a non-tourist restuarant and have a typical Italian meal. There are endless amounts of churches and temples and the decoration in them is amazing.St Peters where Michelangelo's dome is the tallest in the world, sadly he died before completing it. Buy a map and just go for a walk and discover Rome.Do check out the great shops in Rome.Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Corso have good shops.

One of the most impressive ruins at the Forum is The Temple of Saturn. It is a platform with 8 posts(columns). There were many temples built on this spot before and this is the most recent,AD 4th century. Saturn was the god-king of Italy and it was said he wanted a peaceful time,no slavery,no crime or poverty and thats why lots of lower class slaves really liked him.Every year, between dec 17th and 23 dec,Saturn was remembered by week long feasting and sacrofices. During this time, slaves were allowed to drink wine and feast and even be served by their masters.

Emperor Vespasian in AD 72 built the Colosseum.Gladiatorial battles and animal fights were staged here free of charge by the emperor for public viewings. The Colosseum was built very practically with 80 arched entrances,so 55,000 spectators good enter easily. Its also a very pretty building too and despite it being in ruins today, its still worth visiting now.The internal corridors were very wide to allow vast crowds to enter and be seated quickly.
