After visiting Positano, I decided to dedicate a whole page to this wonderful town. As you can see from the picture, this place is truly amazing. When I show people my pictures, they can't get over how the houses are built on the side of the cliffs.
The town of Positano is located on the Amalfi Coast, which is just south of Naples. Along with Positano, the hillside towns of Sorrento, Amalfi, and Ravello, just to name a few, can be found in this same area. To get to Positano, I first had to take the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento. The sight of the train is a little unnerving. Graffiti covers much of the train and you'll pass through some of the unappealing parts of Naples. However, I never felt unsafe. After arriving in Sorrento I took the bus to Positano. Many people may opt to stay in Sorrento as it is much better base for transportation in the area. The bus drive to Positano is both beautiful and thrilling. By thrilling, I mean that I was praying that the bus driver wouldn't wreck and we would tumble down the steep, rocky cliffs into the ocean. Nevertheless, if you are brave and sit near the window keep your camera with you so you won't miss a photo opportunity. The views of the ocean from the road are breathtaking.
Positano is not very large, but because it is build on the hillside it can take some time to explore. When I arrived there, I got off at the wrong stop and had to walk what felt like miles to my hotel. (The bus stops at two places in Positano. One when you first reach the town and one in the center of town.) Much of the city is connected by stairways, and some can be very steep so make sure to watch your step!
I spent much of my time explore the area just above the Spiaggia Grande, which is Positano's main beach. There is a stone road which leads down toward this area that is lined with shops and restaurants. You'll have to take a flight of stairs or two to get down to the beach. Once you'll get down to the beach, you'll see many restaurants. I can't remember exactly, but part of the beach is private, and the other is public. I think you have to pay regardless. I admired the water from afar and never ventured in, so I'm not sure exactly. I spend most of my time walking around the beach and enjoying the scenery.
If you're interested in traveling to Capri, which is a small island located off the coast, you can take a ferry from Positano. If you look at the picture, you can see a white boat. This is where the ferry leaves. I didn't get the chance to go, but I've heard it is really nice. It can be a day trip or you can opt to stay on the island overnight. Ferries also leave from Naples to Capri and also from Naples to Positano.
I only spent two days in Positano but I wish I had spent more time there. There is no place quite like it. As a whole, I really enjoyed the area surrounding Naples. Within Campagnia, I visited Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, and Naples. Positano is just around the corner. (Well, actually, it took about an hour and half to get there from Naples). On my next trip I would like to explore more of the Amalfi coast. However, I'll most likely stay the night in Positano.
- Pros:The views!! Peaceful; a place to really relax and enjoy the sun
- Cons:Maybe a bit out of the way for some people.
- In a nutshell:Gorgeous mountain scenery complete with an ocean view!
