Kerala state in India is famous for it's scenic natural beauty & temples. In fact it is called as The God's own country. The best known pilgrimage destination in Kerala is Sabarimala, high up in the mountains of Western Ghats. it is the most famous & prominent among the Sastha temples. it is believed that lord Parasurama install the idol of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala. The temple stays closed during the rest of the year except for the first five days of the every Malyalam month & during Vishu (April).

Certain customs have to be strictly followed if one has to undertake a pilgrimage to Sabarimala. one should observe the austerities for 41 days. During this period the pilgrim should abstain from alcohol, non veg food & all such carnal pleasures. The pilgrim has to wear traditional black clothes & has to observe fast during these days.

The Holy Golden Steps

The pilgrims set out in groups under a leader called Guruswami. Each one has to carry a bundle of cloth called Irimudi kettu containing traditional offerings. The temple is open to males of all ages & females who have either passed their fertility age or those before reaching the age of puberty.
Many devotees still walk the 45 kms mountainous forest path from Erumelly.
