I have now been living in Hong Kong for the last fourteen years, so felt it was about time I put some information about Hong Kong on V.T. The problem is, though I have been here so long I almost never do anything touristy here any more, so instead of running around madly redoing everything - where on earth would I find time - I will be doing this page very, very slowly as I re-encounter parts of Hong Kong and happen to have my camera on me.
Well, on Friday I visited the Hong Kong Flower Festival and since I will use pictures of that on my HK page, these will definitely not be the most typical images of Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Flower Festival takes place in spring each year and last for around 10 days. It normally takes place in Victoria Park in Causewaybay, though it has sometimes taken place in the rather lovely park in Sha Tin, too.
Events always include a best garden competition with different districts of Hong Kong vying to produce the winning plot of land. There are also best plant competitions - I especially like the bonsai displays some of which create an entire miniature landscape using bonsai. There is also the best school garden and these are great because children are so over the top in their efforts never ever adhering to the concept of less is more.
This year's theme was music so many of the exhibits included an element of music and there was piped in music all round the venue drowning out the traffic and bringing peace and tranquility to the centre of Hong Kong.
Of course a more accurate depiction of life in Hong Kong would involve sky high buildings, mountains, beautiful islands, busy streets, Chinese temples, traffic jams; shops, shops and more shops, a very international assortment of restaurants and lovely sandy beaches next to a rather more murky sea. These may come in time.
- Pros:Excellent public transport, wonderful food, some surprisingly lovely scenery when you escape the centre
- Cons:Air pollution - cough, splutter! teeming crowds!

Great that you have been living in Hong Kong for fourteen years, so you can write about it with considerable authority. My own visit to Hong Kong was 47 years ago, and I'm sure it has changed a lot since then. But I well remember riding the Star Ferries when I was there.
What a lovely page on Hong Kong, Irene :) We sure live in different cities. I love the flower photos :)
