Theodor Aman Art Museum (Jean Mihail Palace) and other Craiova, Romania Things to Do Tips

The Theodor Aman Art Museum is housed in the Jean Mihail Palace, built between 1899-1907, according to the plans designed by the French architect Paul Gauttereau.

This impressive building combines the French academic style with elements of Renaissance and late Baroque. The palace is lavishly furnished with Venetian mirrors and Murano crystal chandeliers; the walls are covered with Lyon silk and the stairs are made of Carrara marble.

Established in 1954, the art museum includes Romanian and universal art galleries (paintings and sculptures) from the 16th-20th centuries and a famous Brâncusi Cabinet with the masterpiece The Kiss (1907).

The Town Hall was built in 1916 in neo-Gothic style by the Romanian architects Ion Mincu and his student Constantin Iotzu. The interior is richly decorated with stained glasses, Venetian mosaics and wrought iron items.

The University of Craiova was founded in 1947. The main structure was initially the headquarters of the Palace of Justice, built after the plans of the Romanian architect I. Socolescu in 1890, a neo-Classical impressive building.

Today, the University of Craiova has 13 faculties, functionning in 6 buildings with 107 rooms and 109 laboratories.

The National Theatre of Craiova was founded in 1850 by Costache Caragiale and Costache Mihaileanu to continue the traditions started as early as the beginning of the 18th century.

The present-day structure was built after the plans of the Romanian architect Al. Iotzu and inaugurated in 1973.

The Prefecture of Dolj county was built in 1913 after the plans of the Romanian architect Petre Antonescu; it is a monumental building, an original interpretation of the traditional forms and elements of the Romanian architecture.

In the square in front of the buildings stands a statue of Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave), work erected in 1991 by C. Panait.

The Sf. Ilie Church was initially built by Ilie Oteteliseanu in 1720; it was reconstructed after the earthquake in 1839 and then rebuilt in 1890 after the plans of F. Springler. Between 1840-1841 the church was paint by Constantin Lecca; the actual painting is by Gh. Tattarascu.
