Getting TO/AROUND: Schiphol (IATA code AMS) is the largest airport in the Netherlands and a hub for KLM, the national air carrier. The airport is situated off the A4 motorway, which links Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. There is a railway station in the terminal’s central hall, under Schiphol Plaza; direct trains run to Amsterdam Centraal Station (journey time: 15 minutes).

Getting TO/AROUND: Built between 1882-1889 on a small artificial island, Centraal Station (main railway station) is a typical example of Dutch Renaissance style. The station's facade and the two towers were designed by P.J.H. Cuypers.

Getting TO/AROUND: Very useful is the Circle tram (line 20) who takes you past almost all tourist attractions in Amsterdam. The Circle tram makes a round through the city in both directions; line 20 A goes clockwise, line 20 B anticlockwise. There is no need to change trams, you can just stay seated until you come to the museum, square of monument you want to visit. The Circle tram rides every ten minutes from 9.00 to 19.00 hours. The last tram leaves Centraal Station at 18.00. You can enter the tram with a regular strippenkaart but you can also buy a special Circle tram ticket which entitles you to unlimited use of the Circle tram. Just have the ticket stamped first by the conductor to validate it. The ticket is also valid on regular trams, busses and the underground everywhere in Amsterdam (also in night busses after 24.00). The stations are : A/B - Central Station 1 - Dam 2 - Spui 3 - Muntplein 4 - Rembrandtplein 5 - Waterlooplein 6 - Mr Visserplein 7 - Plantage Parklaan 8 - Plantage Kerklaan 9 - Roetersstraat 10 - Weesperplein 11 - Oosteinde 12 - Frederiksplein 13 - Stadhouderskade 14 - Van Woustraat 15 - 2e v.d. Helststraat 16 - Ferd. Bolstraat 17 - Ruysdaelkade 18 - Roelof Hartplein 19 - Museumplein 20 - Van Baerlestraat 21 - Hobbemastraat 22 - Leidseplein 23 - Raamplein 24 - Elandsgracht 25 - Marnixstraat 26 - Westermarkt 27 - Dam B1 - Nw.zijdse kolk B2 - Martelaarsgracht (information from www.go-amsterdam.org)

VeronicaG Thu Sep 18, 2008 16:12 UTC The Intercontinental sounds like the perfect place to stay while visiting Amsterdam--luxury AND convenience! Thanks for the tip on photographing, too...sometimes one must be discrete! | Gillybob Mon Nov 5, 2007 12:41 UTC Amsterdam is such an eclectic city - I like the diamond museums and workshops but what woman wouldn't?!
