Nice is the capital of Alpes Maritimes Department and a very important resort of the French Riviera. Nice is built around a bay (Baie des Anges) and its old and new parts are separated by a small stream (Paillon). Touristic attractions include beaches, embankments and promenades (Promenade des Anglais is world famous), several museums (Musee d'Art Moderne, Musee Matisse, Musee National Marc Chagall, Musee des Beaux-Arts Jules-Cheret, Musee d'Art et d'Histoire, Musee de Terra Amata), the Opera House, two cathedrals (Cathedrale Sainte-Reparate, Cathedrale orthodoxe russe Saint-Nicolas), the Roman ruins and the monastery of Cimiez (17th century). History (from Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia) : probably founded by the Greeks as Nicaea about the 5th century BC, Nice became a well-known trading colony in the ancient world. Taken by the Romans in 154 BC, it subsequently changed rulers several times and suffered damage during many wars. In 1388 it acknowledged the supremacy of the house of Savoy, and in 1796 it was ceded to France by Sardinia, which was at that time ruled by the duke of Savoy. Nice was returned to Sardinia in 1814, and in 1860 was reincorporated into France after a plebiscite. |

TravellerMel Sat Nov 7, 2009 08:26 UTC Ahh - I remember the Promenade des Anglais, and the topless beach just below. Back when I was younger, and thinner, and had a nearly all-over tan... :-) Good times! | socrates_07 Wed Apr 20, 2005 07:20 UTC I like those small trains... it reminds me on my ride with that kind of train in Austria. | herzog63 Mon Jul 21, 2003 07:54 UTC I would love to spend some time just riding the small trains through the area!!
