Ballarat Travel Guide: 201 reviews and 499 photos

Ballart was one of stops on the drive back to Melbourne after our Great Ocean Road adventure. The name of the city is derived from an Aboriginal word; Bala a rat which means resting place. Ballarat is a fun city with an interesting History. Ballarat was part of the Gold Rush in Australia and was a Boomtown which transformed it from a sheep station to a big city.

Ballarat was a fun place to explore and we enjoyed taking in the sights. We enjoyed walking the downtown area; exploring the local shops, parks, monuments and restaurants. Both my wife and I love architecture and this city has some great examples of Victorian and Edwardian buildings. We took many walks during our stay and found some lovely houses in quaint neighborhoods.

This was a place we picked to visit sort of by accident and we were glad we came here.
