La Biosfera cloud forest retreat ,Jinotega

We stumbled across Jinotega on our way to the mosquito coast. surrounded totally by mountains its an unspoilt little cowboy town, with a great temporate climate. We were lucky to be in town for the local Hipico ( horse parade), where all the locals bring out their horses to show them off.
lots of cowboy boots and hats, great. We then rented a cabin at La Biosfera , a cloud forest reserve 4 kms out of Jinotega back along the matagalpa road, amazing views of the surrounding mountains. the next day we took a horse trek, it was great, lots of stunning views, tiny little pueblos, the best horses, one of their horses will be having a foal in sept/oct, it was a great experience, you learn to saddle the horses and get free riding lessons included in the price.

The loft at falling water

The cabin we rented for 2 nights is in the middle of the cloud forest reserve, it sleeps up to 6 people, there was only the two of us and it costs $30 a night for 2 people.
Its a totally private cabin which can only be accessed by the waterfall trail, u need sturdy shoes,
It has a little pool in the garden fed by a tiny waterfall, lots of wildlife inc hummingbirds, turtles, frogs and you can hear the howler monkeys in the surrounding mountains. Though not too close!
It is sooo totally tranquil and you feel that you are living right in the cloud forest.

The waterfall walk at La Biosfera

Behind the cabin you can continue walking for another 15 minutes and you walk right up through the cloud forest to the bat cave and the most amazing waterfall. You can take a torch and explore the bat cave. amazing stuff. For the more adventorous you can hike above the bat cave and trail right up to the coffee plantations further up the mountain.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:a great practically undiscovered cowboy town, where you still get cattle and stray horses wandering around the town, lots of quirky little bars for a days bar crawl, get the map from La Biosfera staff, great climate as not as hot as the rest of Nico
  • Cons:Not much shopping here, limited to the markets, the locals mumble a bit when they talk which makes them hard to understand ,
  • In a nutshell:Beautiful scenery and super friendly locals,
