While someone had taken meticulous care in assigning every Calle, Avenida and Callejón a name on the map, actually putting up a sign seems to be something quite unnecessary.
When getting directions in San Jose, it usually consists of "Go down the railroad tracks 300 meters, walk left onto the street with the flower shop and go just past the hardware store with the big red walls".
And if there is a street sign that says "Alto", it's totally optional. One lane (one car) bridges with a warning sign "Ceda", i s purely at the discretion of the driver who's quickest to the middle.
And in the case of a sign telling you that Puerto Viejo is to your left and Panama is straight ahead; somebody has crashed into it knocking it flat.
Just to be consistent with the rest of the country.
