The small city of Wertheim is situated where the two rivers Tauber and Main merge, and so it is at the very beginning of the Taubertal (Tauber valley). The large stone castle lies just above the largely medieval city centre and is quite the eye catcher upon arrival.
The city itself is easily explored on foot. It is a charming Frankish town, with typical houses, narrow streets and small cafes. Go for a walk along the river, the architecture is worth it.
The castle, Burg Wertheim, is not intact, but quite large parts remain and it looks very impressive. Today it houses a cafe/resturant, with a very lovely view of the city, and the castle moat is used as a venue for concerts and other events, from markets to classical concerts and rock concerts. Try to catch a concert here if possible, the atmosphere is something out of the ordinary.
We were indeed very happy to see the cafe at the castle terrace after having climbed (at least it felt like a climb) up from the city centre on a very warm July afternoon. The ensuing thunderstorm was quite spectacular.
- Pros:Very cute little town.
- Cons:A tad on the touristy side in summer.
