On the 2nd. picture u can see the entrance of the market in the old center.
If u walk through u will enter a square with all kinds of goods u can buy.
Very cheap for us. The buildings are colorfull in the old center, but also damaged.
Cause lack of money most buildings arent repared..

Uzhhorod castle

Uzhgorod castle (12-18th) is located in an old part of the city. It is the oldest monument of military art and architecture.
This fortress is re-established many times.

The castle as it stands today has a 16th century facade. In the 11-13th centuries Uzhhorod was under Hungarian rule.

In 1648 a thousand-man detachment of Kozaks arrived, escorting the emissary of Khmelnytsky to the Transylvanian King Rakoci.
At the end of 17th.century Uzhgorod had around ten streets and was on the right bank of Uzh River.
1919 Uzhgorod became the center of Transcarpathian Russ, under the rule of Czechoslovakia. In the fall of 1938, the capital of Carpathian Ukraine, and in 1949, the center of the Transcarpathian region of the Ukrainian SSR.
A guided tour is possible for a very small amount

Mushrooms fresh from the woods

Nastia daughter of my friend goes to the woods with her granddad every sunday and he tells her the names of the mushrooms which can beeaten or not.
And he started when she was only 5,yrs.
the musrooms will be cooked several times and then put in big bottles with special herbs etc.

Subcarpathian Rus' Museum of Folk Architecture ..

This a really must see activity!
2004 Been here again with my friends. I was here before with my family and some other people in 1998

I bought some small paintings at the museum in Uzhgorod made by Balog in 97.
Title: Karpatalja Bereznai ker.
This one i kept myself, the other were given away to others here in Holland.

Its a pleasure to walk around this museum with replica's of several building from the 19th century. One of those houses had beauitful painted blue walls on the out and inside. They told me it was painted with a mix of blueberries.
Because i work at a historical museum in Eindhoven to me it was very interesting to see that people used and still wear (people in the mountains)the same leathermade shoes we have in our museum.
There was also a magnificient totally wooden church without any nail ...

St Nicolas Church

Dont miss the Uzhhorod's fine churches, one will find irresistibly cute the candy-coloured Russian Orthodox, and the huge red brick building on the east side of the old town square, formerly a Jewish synagogue.
We were allowed to visit the inside of the synagoge a nd we saw a 16yr old girl play organ ad she did some specials for us, wow fantastic she was really good..
But all pictures failed snifff.....

On the picture the impressive twin-towered 17th century Cathedral up on the castle hill .
Its really beautifull inside.

Outside there was a young gypsygirl with a baby begging for money..
U will meet several beggers when walking through Uzhgorod..

My aunt Ira is living there with her family. She is a doctor and with her i visited the childrens hospital, for which KIDO is collecting humanatarian goods.

Uzhgorod was a residence of old Russian Prince Laborts at the end of IX - the beginning of X century who made the City a capital Slavic city. The Uzhgorod Castle (XIII century) is one of the most valuable historical and military architectural memorials of Transcarpathian Region. Other places of interest are: the Nikolaevsk rotunda church of XIII-XV century with XIV century frescos, Episcopal Palace (1646), Cathedral (1646), Gymnasia (1784), City Hall (1810), etc. The Uzhgorod Museum of People's Architecture and Life is also interesting. It is in fact one of the first museums under an open ski (SKANSEN). The ruins of the Nevyts'kyi Castle (XIV century) are about 12 km from Uzhgorod.
