South Africa - a world within one country

by Roggeveen - last update: May 5, 2005

Culture in the city

Fortress in Kaapstad
A world within one country.
Untill now I heve never been to a country with such a wide variety as South Africa.
The people of all colours;
The modern cities and the primitive villages;
The many different landscapes with also so many different animals.
In the picture you see a part of the old Dutch fortress in Kaapstad. One of the remains of colonial times.
Traditional housing

Simple way of live

The differences in South Africa are immense. One moment you are in the middle of a modern, western town. The next day you visit people, living in rather primitive housing.
In this picture you see the traditional housing of the original black people.
Slums in Soweto

and slums

Although this is not really a tourist attraction you can not ignore the slums in South Africa. A large group of people is still living in very poor conditions.
