Vreeswijk , my favourite quarter of Nieuwegein. The old part of this town is built on the two quays of a small river (and former lock). There are several bridges, so the town doesn't feel divided by the water. Old houses, bridges and some churches, together with the water, are waiting to be pictured.
Another attraction are the many old ships that have found their home here. Especially around the old shipyard you can spot some nice heritage on the water.
Don’t forget to include a walk on the riverbanks and enjoy the wide view over the rivers and the town of Vianen on the other side. There is also a relative small fortress that can be visited here; Fort Vreeswijk. It's attractive because the water and green area make it a very peaceful place.
Hungry or thirsty? That’s no punishment here. You can choose between a number of nice terraces, pubs and restaurants.
And on a regular basis, several nice events are organised, like Kaarsjesnacht (city lighted by candles), Sinterklaasintocht (Welcome of Saint Nicolas who arrives by ship), markets, a Jazz festival, de Sluizenloop (running event), and more. . .
