Tunis is made up of its historic centre - the organic winding maze of it's medina, and the rectilinear streeets of the modern city just to the east. We stayed in the new town, but most enjoyed wandering the narrow streets of the medina, seeking out one of those cute red hats and admiring the many blue painted, nail studded doors which are the symbol of this old city |
| | Gate Between the Ages The Bab Bhar is an old gat in the wall which once surronded the medina of Old Tunis. Much of the wall is gone, but the gate still forms the portal between the new European city with it's cafes & wide avenues, and the winding claustrophobic complex intensity of the souk |
| | Come into my shop - no need to buy Everyone in the medina has a terrace, where you can enjoy the view over the medina, and maybe buy sone carpets, trinkets, perfume (only pure oils madam, not diluted with alcohol or veggie oil oh no!). The terraces are richly decorated with mosic tiling, and provide a fine vista of minarets and blue sky |
