When I visited a friend who lived near Lake Constance, we decided to go to Switzerland for one day to visit the Rhine Falls. It was very easy to go here by public transport, so it was a perfect daytrip.
The Rhine Falls are the largest plain waterfall in Europe - 373 cubicmetres per second go down here. The falls are 3m high and 150m wide.
Ok, if you have visited Niagara or Iguazú this might not be so impressive to you - but for me it was quite enough for a start. I was very impressed by the mass of water, the noise, and the hugeness of it all. It was just so enormous and gigantic.

Our visit only concentrated on the falls, so we did not visit the town of Schaffhausen itself and this page is only about the falls.

We were quite content to just walk around the falls and look at everything, but there are numerous activities you can do: Go on a boat, take a small railway, visit the castle...
For more information, have a look at the comprehensive website: Rhine Fall Website

What was also very fascinating was that I live near Cologne and see the river Rhine very often. It kind of symbolizes home to me because when I was a child, everytime we crossed the bridge across the Rhine, we cheered and yelled: "Yeah, we're back!!!"
And now I was here, 500km from home, in a different country - but the Rhine was there, too! And to imagine that these big falls were created by my "home river" - I thought it was stunning.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Very impressive powers of nature
  • Cons:Paths around the falls are not suitable if you have walking difficulties
  • In a nutshell:A place I won't forget because it was so impressive! I'm happy we did the trip.

Even if the Rhine Falls are not very high they look impressive. I did not know before that River Rhine had waterfalls like this, so thanks for sharing!

Well I have seen both Niagara and Iguazú but I still find these falls pretty impressive - and I have to admit that I hadn't realised that there were such dramatic falls on the Rhine. I would love to stand on that rock in the centre of the Lower Falls!
