"Callander and the Trossachs" Callander by ettiewyn

Callander Travel Guide: 17 reviews and 39 photos

Like several other towns, Callander is called "the gateway to the highlands", but maybe Callander deserves this title more than other places. It is located right at the Highland Boundary Fault, the mountains dividing the highlands from the lowlands. Walking up the main street, you constantly have a view of these high mountains - a fantastic backdrop to this pretty little town. And if that wasn't beautiful enough, Callander is also very close to the Trossachs, the "highlands in miniature" as they are called. Together with Loch Lomond, the Trossachs form Scotland's first national park, founded in 2002. It is a wonderful region of lochs and mountains, just so beautiful. This certainly was a highlight of my two months trip around the UK!

We might have been lucky that we visited in low season, it must be quite crowded here in high season. Similar to other places, the boom started when Queen Victoria visited, and the railway (which is closed today) was built afterwards. Sir Walter Scott also had his fair share in making Callander popular, through his novel Rob Roy which takes place in the Trossachs.

Callander was the second stop of a guided tour I did from Edinburgh, called "West Highland Lochs and Castles". If you would like to continue on the tour with me, visit the next stop, my Loch Awe page.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:A pretty town with a beautiful backdrop, and the stunning Trossachs closeby
  • Cons:According to the guidebooks it is very crowded in high season
  • In a nutshell:One of the best places I visited in Scotland so far!

Great that you found postcards with the lovely landscape of Trossach. I don't like the type of postcards with bagpipers and highland cattle either.
