"Winton - Matilda Country" Winton by ettiewyn
Winton Travel Guide: 18 reviews and 36 photos
Winton is a small and friendly outback town and I liked my stay there very much. It is known for two reasons: The song Waltzing Matilda was written here, and together with its neighbouring town Longreach it is the founding place of Qantas Airlines.
The main attractions of the town deal with these topics, but there are also several other small things to explore! The locals really try to make the most of their town and I liked that very much.
Winton is located in the outback of Queensland, but it can easily be reached by Greyhound. I went this way because I needed to go from Brisbane to Cairns and did not feel like going along the coast again, so I took the Greyhound inland - of course this took much longer and involved a lot of time on the bus, but I liked my small adventure very much. Besides Winton, I also visited Longreach and Mount Isa.
- Pros:An outback town with a lot of character
- Cons:Very much off the beaten path (although I think that's a pro ;-)
- In a nutshell:A small adventure :-)

Yes, that must have been an eerie feeling to be the only guest in that big old hotel in the middle of the outback when all the lights went off! Good that it wasn’t a ghost on the stairs but only the hotel manager. (Thanks for including the link to Slim Dusty on YouTube.)
I really enjoyed this page. We stayed in Winton last year and I've been meaning to write a page myself. You brought back so many memories, well done.
