The oldest town in La Vallée d´Abondance is the small, pitoresque town Abondance. About 700 years ago, Swiss monks from the abbey of St. Maurice set up camp here. The Abondance abbey´s fame started growing, the cheese production of the Abondance cheese became popular within the royal families and little by little the village grew. Nowadays, Abondance has 1370 inhabitants.
When you enter the valley, you will see a sign which sais "Vallée d'Abondance, Pays des Arts & Histoire". In 2003 the Abondance valley was awarded the "Land of art and history" certificate by the Minister of Culture, because of its remarkable patrimony and treasures.
The Abbey sure is one of this regions' treasures. It's situated in the centre of Abondance and consists of the cloisters, the church and the museum for Religious Arts.
Another cultural pearl is the Maison du Val (the valley's house) in La Chapelle d'Abondance; a heritage centre where you learn all about the cheese fabrication and the agri-pastoral life in the valley.
For a long time Abondance was part of Les Portes du Soleil, until something went wrong. The maire was given the opportunity to start something new, with help of the regional gouvernment.
He opened a new, snow playground in the village centre. Here you find several sledge runs down white slopes. Fun for young and old!
- Pros:Village with a soul, nice market, lots of sun
- Cons:No longer part of Les Portes du Soleil, the first ski lift is in La Chapelle d'Abondance
- In a nutshell:Where time stands still...
