"Ottawa - Canada's Capital" Ottawa by GrumpyDiver

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Ottawa are the ones related to Ottawa being the capital city of Canada.
During the summer months, there is a Changing of the Guard ceremony. This image shows the "old guard", i.e. the one to be relieved. The key to the guardroom is exchanged with the "new guard". You can see the key tucked into the waistband of the guardsman. The guardsmen are drawn from the Canadian Army, Navy and Airforce. Some guardsmen are regular military personnel while others come from the reserves. There are two companies of guards the Governer General's Footguards, from Ottawa and the Canadian Grenadier Guards, from Montreal.
If you miss the ceremony, you can either visit the Canadian War Memorial (near Parliament Hill) or the Governer General's Residence on Sussex Dr to see some more guardsmen.
As you will note by all of the people in the background, this is a very popular thing for visitors to Canada to see.
The nice thing about being the Capital City is that there are numerous places to get out and enjoy nature. Hogs Back Falls is located in one of Ottawa's many parks
The Ottawa River is a major waterway that is part of Ottawa's history.
In the past, Ottawa was called Bytown, after Colonel By, the builder of the Rideau Canal. Ottawa was a lumber town, supplied by the ample forests that lay upstream of the city. The Ottawa River was used to transport the logs to the mills in Ottawa.
- Pros:A beautiful city with lots to see and do
- Cons:The winters - long and miserable
- In a nutshell:Like much of Canada - solid, safe but not all that exciting

Great page about Ottawa! I must visit our Capital one of these days, it looks like a great place to visit. Great tips and wonderful photos. Thanks for sharing!
Hahaha, you are so right. No problem when we locals go around to take some photos, we just blend in with the tourists. :)
We know it is spring in Ottawa when the Asian tourists arrive on Parliament Hill.
Thanks for the warning on no photos of the American Embassy, I would not have wanted the burly men to stop me... I would like to see Hog's Back Falls and the Remic Rapids. Not quite sure though how to get there.
Love the photos of the natural environment around Ottawa, Manfred. I'd like to visit in the winter one year I think. I like real winters but on England's south coast it's usually a bit of a non event.
Nice page manfred!
I get a little out-of-home sick visiting your page. Time to re-visit I guess. PJ
shall we have a VT meet ? ;-)))
Lovely city!
The scenery must be great there for all seasons. YOu have a nice place to roost when not traveling.
Lovely photos. Thanks for sharing.
nice page! Ottawa may be boring for the locals but it seems lovely for the visitor!
